Oktober Bierfest launches in South Africa

Posted in Cape Town,Concerts Events,Gauteng by SA Blog Editor, 9 August 2011.

Bierfest launches in SA

For more than 200 years the annual Oktoberfest in Munich has been a defining part of Bavarian culture and has grown to become the world’s largest festival, attracting more than five million people from around the globe to Germany each year. Attending the Oktoberfest is on the ‘bucket list’ for many, but this year South Africans will not have to travel abroad for the experience, as Oktober Bierfest is coming to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

“Oktober Bierfest is a recreation of traditional Bavarian beer festivals,” says Andrew Douglas, Director of The Entertainment Group (TEG), producers of the event. “Halls will be draped in traditional style and guests can enjoy an array of Bavarian cuisine supplied by the finest local purveyors of German food, be served by Fraulein while listening to an entertainment lineup, including live Oompah bands.”

In order to bring the taste of Germany to Oktober Bierfest, founding partner The South African Breweries Ltd (SAB), will be brewing beers exclusively for the event. “We are committed to supporting the growth of the beer category as a whole and are looking forward to brewing three special limited edition Bavarian-styled beers. For the first time ever, South Africans can enjoy Royal Bavaria Oktoberfest Bier, King Ludwig’s Munich Dunkel and Protea Edelweiss Krystal Weiss,” says Diarmaid De Burca, General Manager of Newlands Brewery, the SAB’s flagship brewery.

With the added involvement of the South-African – German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the event, the Oktober Bierfest promises to be an authentic Bavarian festival.

“We are delighted to have been chosen as the host venue for an event steeped with such rich history and tradition,” says Steve Howell, General Manager of Montecasino. “South Africa itself is a melting pot of cultures and traditions brought together by a common love of beer, and Montecasino’s Outdoor Events Area is the perfect venue to accommodate these beer-lovers of every demographic in large numbers. The inclusion of an authentic Bavarian Oktober Bierfest is a welcome addition to the annual Jozi social calendar.”

Oktober Bierfest will tour to Cape Town from 29 September to 1 October 2011 on the Village Green, Newlands Brewery and to Johannesburg from 27 to 29 October 2011 at Montecasino’s Outdoor Event Area. The event is open to both corporate functions and the public alike. For ticket sales or more information email bookings@oktoberbierfest.co.za or visit www.oktoberbierfest.co.za.

The Brightwater Commons, in conjunction with the Chinese Embassy in South Africa will be hosting a celebration of the Chinese New Year on Saturday 12th February 2011. To start at 11am, this event will feature a variety of vibrant cultural performances as well as colourful exhibitions that will allow visitors to experience the beauty and diversity of the Chinese culture.

Whilst the exhibitions and stalls will open at 11am, the entertainment programme will begin at 1pm with an official opening ceremony. This will be followed by the ever popular and spectacular Lion and Dragon dances. Other performances that will dazzle and delight visitors will include an acrobatics, contortion and fire act; traditional Umbrella and Fan dancing, as well as demonstrations of martial arts.

The event’s highlight will be a set of acts by the talented Yunnan Arts Troupe originating from Yunnan, which is regarded as China’s most culturally diverse province. The professional 14 member troupe will reflect the colour and culture of the province through the dances of the region’s different ethnic minorities. They will also present a delightful magic show and Tibetan songs.

Visitors can also see a variety of cultural exhibitions, from arts and crafts all the way to clothing; and enjoy lunch on the commons as there will be numerous food stalls specializing in different kinds of delicious Chinese cuisine ranging from stir-fried dishes to sweet treats. The celebrations will close at 5pm.

According to the Chinese Zodiac calendar, 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit. To the Chinese people, speed, strength and kindness of heart are traits associated with the rabbit. They therefore believe that those born in the Year of the Rabbit are clever, romantic, modest and merciful. The rabbit is the 4th animal on the calendar, which dates back to more than 2000 years ago. There are 12 animals on the calendar which works in 12 year cycles. The Chinese believe that these animals appeared before Buddha or the Jade Emperor. The animals are listed on the calendar in their order of arrival, starting with the rat and followed by the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Soweto – Johannesburg

Posted in Attractions,Gauteng by SA Blog Editor, 25 February 2007.

Soweto is an urban area in the City of Johannesburg, South Africa. Its name is an English syllabic abbreviation, short for South Western Townships. However, some feel it came from the relocating residents asking “So Where To”. Soweto is well known for its past history of struggle and uprisings.

The history of the black townships that would later form Soweto was propelled by the increasing eviction of black Africans by city and state authorities. Black Africans had been drawn to work on the gold mines that sprang up after 1886. From the start they were accommodated in separate areas on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The economic development of Soweto was severely shortened by the apartheid state, which provided very limited infrastructure and prevented residents from creating their own businesses. Roads remained unpaved, and many residents had to share one tap between four houses. Soweto was meant to exist only as a dormitory town for black Africans who worked in white houses, factories, and industries. (more…)

Annual Henley High School Regatta

Posted in Concerts Events,Gauteng,Sporting Events by SA Blog Editor, 12 February 2007.

The annual Henley High School Regatta and Cricket Challenge will once again take place on Sunday 11th March 2007 at Fraser Park in Hearn Rd. Henley on Klip, Gauteng. This exciting event is one of the highlights in Henley’s calendar and attracts participants from outside the village. Last year a group of brave sailors floated a bakkie and finished the race with it, took it out of the water and drove off. There is no limits to the creativeness of what can be built, as long as it floats!

Henley High Regatta

Last year a cricket challenge went out from Henley High’s senior pupils and parents to the rest of the Village members, the format was a limited over’s game, and to the surprise of everyone the Village got a bit of a lesson on how to play the wonderful game of cricket. This year the lines have been drawn, the pitch is looking great, and there will be a bit of a revenge game. Some would say that the pitch has been prepared to suit the Village team, but it does not frighten the boys from Henley high.

The stakes are high this year as a floating trophy will be presented to the winning team so that there can be no dispute in years to come as to who won and on what year!

The format for the Raft Race be as follows:
School Challenge: Pupils from the school will be building and entering a raft (the emphasis will be on creativity rather than speed) the idea is to have some real snazzy water craft. The school will challenge other schools in the Midvaal area. The different School teams will provide their own Cheerleader girls.

Corporate Challenge: Any company can enter a raft or rafts, they can advertise on the rafts and host a hospitality tent, if they so wish, for their staff or customers.

Village Challenge: This category is for all Henley residents and businesses.

Procession: All rafts will assemble on Sunday morning at Fraser Park for judging and then form a procession through the village in order to show off their craft to the village. They will proceed to the starting line in Dinsdale Rd and hopefully the rafts will finish at the Scouts Hall.

Cricket Challenge:
After the race there will be a Bring N Braai at Fraser Park. The parents of Henley High & Prep will then challenge the rest of the village in a limited overs Cricket match in the afternoon. Food and drinks will be available for sale and the village crafters will also be marketing their wares.

There will be no entry fee for participant or craft stalls. The schools tuck shop will sell refreshments and Prego rolls. If any other parties are interested in having food stalls they will have to enter a raft in order to have a stall.

This unique event promises to be a lot fun. There is no other like it in Gauteng.
So get the kids and friends together and start building that awesome raft NOW!!
