Robin Auld at the Waterfront

Posted in Cape Town,Concerts Events by SA Blog Editor, 5 April 2007.

Robin Auld at the BMW Pavilion

Treat yourself to an evening of humour and musical excellence with Robin Auld’s “Only in it for the Money – A Songwriter’s Tale”. The show will run from 19 April to 28 April 2007 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at the Theatre @ The Pavilion at Cape Town’s Waterfront.

To celebrate 25 years of playing music, the show includes tales of the people and places that have featured in his life and travels, anecdotes about his early days in the South African music business, and the stories behind the songs. For instance, you can find out how Donna Summer scarred him for life, what it is like to follow Patricia Lewis on stage in Bloemfontein, and how he paid back Rod Stewart for playing Sun City!

He will be accompanied by Barry van Zyl and Schalk Joubert. Apart from being the regular drummer with Johnny Clegg with whom he tours Europe and America, Barry has also played with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Peter Gabriel and Mick Hucknall. Schalk Joubert is a new addition to the band but is also a seasoned player, having toured with many of South Africa’s top acts.

Born to Scottish parents in Lusaka, Zambia, Robin’s childhood was spent travelling between South Africa and Scotland. The beginning of his musical career was based more on his abilities as a guitarist than as a singer. He learned to play the guitar by listening to Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young, and wrote songs influenced by western musicians. Later on he absorbed influences from the various guitarists of South Africa such as Louis Mhlanga and Philip Tabane. His sound is characterized by a contemporary mix of roots and pop music.

Robin is an accomplished singer/ songwriter, poet and author. His first public appearances were as a sideman in several local bands, before starting to perform his own material at various late night venues. His first solo album “At the Corner”, produced by Kevin Shirley, became a cult favourite around False Bay and he went on to release several albums that were successful nationally.

After two years of pop/rock success he moved to the UK where he started incorporating more South African and Celtic guitar elements into his music. He started his own label, Free Lunch, in 1999.

He works alternately in SA, the UK and the USA, and is currently in Cape Town promoting the new album “Jungle of One”. He also published the South African novel “Tight Lines”, and has recently published “Kelp”, a collection of poems and short stories.

CONCERT TIMES:
The show starts at 20:00 with show tickets costing R95.00 per person. It is preceded by a buffet dinner at Fascination Café, the restaurant at Theatre @ The Pavilion, starting at 18:00. A combined dinner and show ticket cost R180.00 per person.
